Three Ways to Drink More Water and the Benefits of Staying Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water a day is important for keeping your body functioning properly. Water carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells, aids healthy digestion, flushes bacteria from the bladder, helps normalize blood pressure, cushions the joints, regulates body temperature, stabilizes the heartbeat and more.

Unfortunately, most people don’t drink enough water each day to reap these benefits. There is no perfect amount that applies to everyone, but in general, healthy people should aim for at least four to six cups a day. If you’re breaking a sweat exercising or spending time outdoors in the heat, drink two to three cups each hour to stay hydrated.

If you have trouble reaching that goal, follow these tips to increase your water consumption.

Add flavor.

If you don’t like the flavor of water, add some fresh chopped fruits or herbs to your bottle. Sliced strawberries, cucumbers and mint are popular additions that will give your water a light taste without adding sugar or negating the effects of staying hydrated. Using a reverse osmosis filter system can also make your water taste extra fresh.

Set an alarm.

If you need a reminder to drink, set an alarm on your phone. You’ll soon get in the habit of taking sips every hour.

Purchase a reusable bottle.

Taking a refillable bottle with you to work or social engagements means you’ll never be without water. Choose a bottle with a handle for easy use on-the-go, and don’t leave home without it.
