Source of the Water
The first thing to consider is the source water, which will determine the type of system you need. There are two main types of source water in the U.S.:

You can measure the overall effectiveness of your filter system using a TDS measure, along with WQA and NSF certifications and the local Consumer Confidence Reports, all of which will give you a clear picture of your area’s water quality and the filtration quality of your system.
